^^Not from Mission Everest, but still a good starting picture :)^^ I got to watch the new Man vs Wild with Bear Grylls at 6 tonight three hours before anyone else around here that doesn't have Verison Fios in HD. We just recently got Discovery Channel HD so this was my first actual show I got to see on it's premeire night. Part I of the Sahara Desert episode was on and then Bear's Mission Everest afterwards. I must say, the Mission Everest was very stressful to watch... I posted some pictures that I had gotten from a while ago when the event was first filmed so since tonight it was aired... I thought I'd share. Basically, Mission Everest was his attempt and success at paragliding over Mount Everest with a specialized motor and such to set a new record. His altimiter froze (literally froze... like ice) at a little over 25,000 feet, but still they were able to calculate how high he went by his speed andtiming before it had froze. He made about 30,000 feet--approx 400 feet higher than Everest. His partner had to bail out because his supercharge drive belt failed and he couldn't make it to the altitude.
This is Bear's kid, Jesse, testing out the paraglider made escpecially for this event in his pj's
Bear and the glider
Testing in the windtunnel, he almost got frostbite on his face and had a few small red marks on his face afterwards for a few days. Bear at basecamp at Everest
He wanted to go on the first clear day but they took too long to get ready and three votes against him made the decision he would not fly that day.
Probably checking the weather or the data from the weather balloons that they released.
That little white parachute would be Bear...
It was emotional for Bear. He started to cry when he started talking about his wife while he was at Basecamp and had to walk away for a while. |
